The Northville Township Police Department
now uses computer and laser technology to conduct serious
and fatal traffic crash investigations. The equipment will
allow for accurate measurements to be put into scale
drawings.

Traffic Bureau
The Traffic Bureau is currently staffed by Officer Chris Cox.
Officer Cox has the full time duty to enforce state and local traffic
laws as well as handling all traffic crashes.
Officer Cox conducts speed enforcement with Radar Units mounted in
the front and back of his patrol car. Officer Cox also has a state of
the art hand held Laser Unit that can pick out a speeding vehicle in
heavy traffic with great accuracy.
Motor Cycle Unit
The Northville Township Police Department has two fully
marked Harley-Davidson Motorcycles. These motorcycles are used for
general road patrol, traffic enforcement and special events. This unit
is able to patrol areas with confined spaces such as bike paths in the
parks or areas with heavy traffic.
The motor unit consists of 6 full time officers:

Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI)

Fuel Capacity: 5.0 gallons
Emergency Equip: Front-mounted strobe lamps (one red & one blue), one
rear mast mounted strobe (blue), Whelan 100-watt siren system, police
radio, Kustom radar (moving and stationary)
In the 2005 riding season the Northville Township Police Motorcycle
Unit participated in the following events:
- 4- Thin Blue Line Rides
- Barn move
- Solstice Run
- Memorial Day Parade
- Victorian Festival Parade
- Fourth of July Parade
- Woodward Dream Cruise
- Routine Patrol
- Traffic Enforcement
- Community Education

Smart Trailer
(Public awareness tool for speed)
The trailer has a digital display that shows the speed of oncoming
motorists. This trailer can be requested on any Township roadway where
public awareness on the current speed limit needs to be reminded to
motorists. This trailer is usually deployed as a reminder to motorist
to be aware of the speed limit. The second phase of this enforcement
would be writing traffic citations to violators.

Data Processor
(Monitoring traffic flow and speed)
The data processor can be deployed to assess traffic flow problems
and when peak times might occur. The data processor can be requested
and is used to determine problem areas and best times for enforcement.
Supplements to the Traffic Bureau
The Traffic Bureau has the following support personnel and
vehicles:
- Officer Dan MacArthur will be conducting Motor Carrier
Enforcement dealing with trucks.
- Officer Charles Cole will be conducting Salvage Inspections
required by the Michigan Secretary of State.
- The department has 3 Harley Davidson Cycles to conduct traffic
enforcement and escort details (funerals, heavy duty movers,
parades, etc.)
- The department has an Accident Investigation Team of five
officers to investigate serious and fatal crashes.
