D.A.R.E.

D.A.R.E. is a police officer led series of classroom lessons that teach children how to resist peer pressure to experiment with alcohol and drugs.  Dare also teaches students to resolve disputes before they become violent.  The program forms a triangle involving police, parents and schools working together to keep children drug and violence free.

D.A.R.E. has been in the Northville community since 1992. D.A.R.E. started out in Northville area private schools (Northville Christian School and the Northville Montessori Center).  During the 1997-98 school year D.A.R.E. was introduced to the Northville Public School District as an after school voluntary program at Meads Mill Middle School and Silver Spring Elementary School. Positive feedback from parents and students who attended the program has called for its expansion.

D.A.R.E. was introduced to the Northville Public School District in the fall of 1998 to all five elementary schools in the district as well as the two middle schools for sixth graders. After negotiating with the Northville Public School District, the program is being offered before or after school as a voluntary activity for fifth or sixth grade students. The program lasts 10 weeks with 10 lessons one day a week. A note will be sent home to parents for permission to sign your child up. Class size is limited.

D.A.R.E. has four lessons for each K-4 grades that are age appropriate on drug prevention and safety (these lessons can be presented to any group by calling Officer Demeter).

D.A.R.E. also has ten follow-up lessons that can be utilized in high school (currently utilized by the Novi Public School District).  The D.A.R.E. high school lessons have been presented at Hawthorn Center.

Officer Demeter conducts parent meetings at every school that has the D.A.R.E. program in place. These parent meetings overview the D.A.R.E. lessons and share positive parenting information on boundary setting, communication and self-esteem. Call Officer Demeter for dates and times of current meeting locations. All parents are invited to attend. Officer Demeter has also donated the "D.A.R.E. Official Parent’s Guide book, Keeping Kids Drug Free", to all of the Northville Elementary School Libraries parent reference shelf.  He encourages you to check it out.

The 5th-6th grade D.A.R.E. program is also currently being taught at the Northville Montessori Center and Metro Jr. Academy during the regular school day.

If you have any questions call Officer Larry Demeter at the Northville Township Police Department at (248) 349-9400 or email him.

For further information on D.A.R.E. visit the D.A.R.E America national web site or the D.A.R.E. Michigan web site.

The Northville Township Police Department acquired a Ford F-150 Pick-up donated by Blackwell Ford for Officer Demeter to utilize in bringing the D.A.R.E. message out to the community.  If you see the D.A.R.E. truck driving around the community or parked at a school don't hesitate to ask Officer Demeter any questions.
