Become a mentor.
It only takes an hour a week to be that one person who
can change everything for a child.

and follow his or her dream.
The reward? Knowing you’ve helped a young person
live up to his or her potential. More than 96% of
mentors say they’d recommend becoming a mentor to a
friend.
Northville Youth Assistance has been matching local
children with mentors for more than 15 years. A
recent increase in requests for mentors has prompted a
call for volunteers.
Volunteer mentors participate in a training program,
then they are matched with a Northville child between the
ages of 5 and 16 and asked to spend an hour or so a week
with the child, becoming a trusted friend and having fun
together.

Our Mission
The mission of Northville Youth Assistance (NYA) is to improve the
lives of our youth and their families through mentoring, counseling,
tutoring, advocacy and program development.
In the past year, more than 1,500 children and teens participated
in NYA programs.
As a community-funded social service organization,
NYA has implemented more than 18 years of successful resiliency-based
prevention and intervention programming for the betterment of
Northville’s youth and families. NYA is a key member of the
community’s safety net for young people. An extensive network of
volunteers enhances the program and provides additional support to our
community’s youth.
Programs
Mentoring
Mentoring has been a major part of NYA’s programming since 1989.
Volunteer mentors are matched one-on-one with a child in the community
for the purpose of modeling responsible behavior and providing a
listening ear. Children are referred to the mentoring program by
parents, teachers and school social workers.
Mentors meet weekly with their assigned youth for up to one year. More
than 200 children have been matched with mentors since the program’s
inception.
Resiliency Programs
“Powerful Kids” for younger children and
“Pillar” for high school freshmen are two examples of these programs.
Both classes provide participants the tools they need to face life’s
challenges.
After-School Programs
Middle school homework help and music lessons give
youngsters a safe place while providing productive activities in the
after-school hours when they might otherwise be home alone.
Police and Court Diversion Program
Teens who have been in trouble with the law or at
school are given the opportunity to learn from their mistakes by
participating in educational groups, individual and family counseling
and by performing community service. This program is provided at
no charge to residents of the Northville community. Currently
four classes are offered: anger management, shoplifting,
decision making and substance abuse.
Parent Information
Love and Logic parenting classes and a series of
speakers provide parents with helpful information about raising
children in today’s world. Recent speakers include Rosalind
Wiseman, author of “Queen Bees and Wannabes” and Dan Kindlon, author
of “Raising Cain”.
Northville Youth-Community Action Council
NYCAC, as the group is known, is a group of high
school students whose mission is, “To address the interests of
Northville teens by voicing and acting on their concerns with
enthusiasm and determination.” Northville Youth Assistance
sponsors this group and provides adult leadership.
Community Partnerships
NYA works with the Northville Public Schools, Parks
and Recreation, the Chamber of Commerce, the courts, police
departments and other community organizations to provide programs,
advocate for children and to encourage dialogue for the betterment of
the entire community.
